Superalloys

Materials Overview

All-Round Superior Performance

Superalloys are heat resistance alloys of nickel, iron-nickel, and cobalt which can be used at high temperatures, often >70% of their melting temperatures. They can be used at temperatures exceeding 1050°C with excursions up to 1200°C. This temperature resistant characteristic makes it a suitable replacement candidate for Tungsten Carbide in Pick Up applications.

The most widely applied type of Superalloy is nickel-based material that contains a high concentration of chromium, iron, titanium, cobalt and other alloying elements. As with other metal material groups, the properties of superalloys can be adjusted with various heat treatments and/or annealing and quenching. Compared to other material groups, Superalloys have the highest maximum service temperature and highest hardness values. The strength of Superalloys makes it the best alternative to Carbide in high bond force applications (>1kg).

Material Description Hardness ESD Surface Resistance (Ω) Service Temperatures (Deg C)
Superalloys (SA) Haynes 25 (L605) HRC 20 - 22 Conductive (< E2) >800
Inconel Alloy 625 HRC 30.5 - 41 Conductive (< E2) >800
Inconel Alloy 718 HRC 23 - 48 Conductive (< E2) >800
Incoloy Alloy 925 HRC 26 - 38 Conductive (< E2) >800
Nitronic 50 HRC 22 - 41 Conductive (< E2) >800
Nitronic 60 HRC 24 - 46 Conductive (< E2) >800
Titanium Grade 2 HRC 3 - 16 Conductive (< E2) >800
Stellite 6 HRC 36 - 46 Conductive (< E2) >800
Stellite 31 HRC 30 Conductive (< E2) >800
Inconel® Alloy 718 has the highest maximum hardness but has a lower maximum service temperature than other Superalloys such as Incoloy® 925, Nitronic® 60 and Stellite® 31. The most widely used Superalloy is Alloy 718, which comprises more than 50% of Superalloy usage today. Alloy 718 is a popular choice for tools used in high demand Die Attach applications. Other Superalloy grades used in our product rage are Nitronic® and Stellite®. Nitronic® 60 has the best combination of high hardness (HRC 46 max.) and highest service temp. (980°C). Nitonic® 60 is used in renowned for its excellent anti-wear characteristics. Stellite® Superalloys are cobalt-chromium alloys, along with other elements which refine the alloy properties for specific applications. The carbon content of Stellite® alloys has a large influence on its properties. For example, Stellite® 6 has a higher carbon content than Stellite® 31 (1.2% compared to 0.5%). This is responsible for the higher hardness, but lower maximum service temperature of Stellite® 6 compared to Stellite® 31. Stellite® 31 is an excellent replacement for Carbide when used as the base material for Dispensing Nozzles and Stamping Tools of our Adhesive Systems.
